Orchids have to have aseveraltypes of care than standard houseplants because they arean entirely different kind of plant. Here’s some beneficialtipsto follow when raisingyour own orchids:

Provide Your Orchid The properQuantity of Light

Giving your orchid adequate light is completelyessential if you assume your orchid to growin to the lovely plant which it was intended to be. When orchids experience limited light, they produce less flowers, or none whatsoever. When your orchid leaves turn a dark green, this is an indication that the orchid is getting deficient light. However, excessive light will burn your orchid and can consequently harm it. Seems like the case, the leaves can providea clue. Should the leaves turn a yellowish-green or red color, your orchid is getting too much light. The leaves to your orchid will display a bright green once the plant is subjected to the optimum amount of light.

          ]]>

To get the best light, place a filter between the sunlight and your orchid. This can be achieved by placing your orchid on a windowsill thatwill get direct light and hanging see-through curtains on the window to disperse the sunshine somewhat. Feeling the leaves of your orchid is yet anothergreat wayto seewhen the plant is getting adequate light. Offer more diffusion when the leaves feel warmer to touch. Generally if the leaves feel cooler as opposed to surrounding air, you could haveto move your orchid to a new spot where it is going tohave more sunlight.

Provide Your Orchid the required Amount and Form of Fertilizer

Giving an excessive amount of fertilizer to an orchid is uncharacteristic of how the specie acquires its nutrition while in the wild. If the orchid is givenan excessive amount of fertilizer, the roots will burn and this will drastically affect its flowering. Within their native surroundings, orchids arenourished from rain water which is absorbed by its roots. When it rains, nutrients from organic debris of rotting vegetation mixes together with the water. This water feeds the roots belonging to the orchid, along withmost casesit’s thebest way orchids are fed.

Orchid’s nutritional needs are different from crops and common household plants. Consequently, you should not use conventional plant fertilizers. These fertilizers contain a compound called urea that’s ideal for crops and houseplants, however , not for orchids.

Ideal orchid fertilizer contains variations of three fundamental ingredients: nitrogen, phosphorus, along with potassium and alsotrace mineralsincluding iron.

As with many Tropical Plants, Hoya care requires consideration of their natural habitat. Drainage Hoyas can be found in most terrestrial habitast known to man. Most Hoyas inhabit tropical regions and enjoy warm, humid conditions for most of the year. For example, many Hoyas originate from Indonesia, which has a tropical climate with average annual temperatures in the region of 30 degrees Celsius. However, even tropical regions show variations in climate, decreasing as you get further inland and at higher elevations. It is much cooler from June through to September when the North Eastern monsoon arrives.

Many Hoyas are epiphytic and share their homes with, or make their homes on, other tropical plants. They establish in the forest canopy, entwined around branches and clinging to bark with their roots. Their only food is the decaying matter found in the crevices, washed over their roots by water run-off.These observations give you an insight into the life of tropical Hoya in their natural habitat. Remember that Hoyas do inhabit an incredibly varied range of habitats and grow in many different ways. However, these observations apply to the majority of Hoya species found in tropical regions. You can provide these conditions by following a few simple steps.

          ]]>

These plants will benefit from excellent drainage. I use a 50/50 mix of compost and Perlite. This gives the roots optimum airy conditions they need and prevents water-logging, which is one of the only ways to kill many Hoya. Hoya tend to inhabit semi-shaded forest canopies – don’t let them sit on a scorching windowsill. Direct sunlight in small doses may be of benefit, but continued direct sun will bleach the leaves and harm your plant. This also applies to most tropical plants. Hoya australis ‘Lisa’ enjoys a bit of strong light. The new leaves are tinged with red in bright light, reverting to their variegated form.

If your potting mix is well-drained, you shouldn’t have a problem with watering. Water when the soil is almost completely dry and you will be allowing plenty of air to the roots. An epiphytic plant will have just enough water to get by on, but not so much that they become waterlogged. To recreate canopy conditions, I mist mine every few days. This also allows me to apply foliar feed, which I do about 4 times in the growing season, and each time a plant is in bloom.

Hoya should not be exposed to temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius for long. If you are over-wintering them in cool conditions, please make sure they are very dry.

Remember that most Hoya are Tropical Plants and whilst many are tough, some have a more demanding nature.

Caring for Tropical Plants such as Hoyas can be a confusing issue. I always consider the natural habitat of the plant and replicate it to the best of my ability. Hoya care can be easy if you make sure you use the right soil, the right pots and have an appropriate care routine. Take a look at my Caresheets, stroll through my Gallery, or visit my Shop at Molly’s Tropical Plants – making tropical plants easy

Boston ferns are plants that you are likely to see inside and out probably more than most other plants. With its lengthy fronds and frilly leaves, it is a great plant for hanging on porches, decks and patios and anywhere you want to add a touch of living decor.

How to care for your fern when it is grown inside:

There are many people who don’t like growing the Boston fern inside their homes because it sometimes does not respond well. One of the most problems is the plant will shed its leaves and begin to look sickly. Because the plant is not placed in the right spot

          ]]>

The Boston fern will do well in lit areas but not in direct sunlight. A windowsill facing the East or West is a good spot. This plant enjoys misting and regular watering. The ideal temperature is between 65 to 75 degrees. During nightfall the range should be between 55 to 65 degrees.

The plant loves high humidity and one-way to provide this is to fill a dish with small stones and water. Place it close to the fern so the water evaporation supplies the humidity it needs. You can also use a humidifier placed close to the plant. The soil should never be allowed to become too dry.

Feeding Boston Ferns:

A nitrogen rich plant food should be fed to the Boston fern. Use the type that is mixed with water. Apply only during the spring, summer and fall. If you want your Boston fern to become larger, transplant it into a larger pot. The size of the pot you use will decide how large the plant grows. While transplanting the fern you may divided the plant and start new ferns.
